Sexual Harassment & Assault

Who We Are

We are a group of UAW 4121 members who advocate for survivors of sexual harassment and assault, and who seek to eliminate sexual violence both at UW and in the broader community.

Short term goals:

  • Develop a better understanding of existing University training requirements and resources
  • Increase the number of emergency phones available on campus, especially in the Health Sciences Building
  • Increase the accessibility and visibility of information about resources available to survivors
  • Improve ASEs’ awareness of the Union as a strong resource and advocate for survivors of harassment and assault

Long term goals:

  • Establish an anonymous reporting system online for campus members to report instances of harassment and assault
  • Establish robust and effective protection against retaliation or other losses for ASEs who report supervisors, including alternate positions that immediately remove the ASE from the supervision of any alleged harasser, and protection for anyone whose employment is negatively impacted by the termination or other discipline of a wrongdoing supervisor
  • Establish mandatory, regular trainings for all supervisors that include detailed information about consent and mechanisms for ensuring accountability for the information learned
What We Do

Updates & Ongoing Work:

  • Following an incident in the Health Sciences Building in May 2016, union representatives in the medical sciences wrote a demand letter to UWPD and Health Sciences Administration, including calls for improved communication and increased trainings. We are continuing to work to ensure these demands are met.
  • Following news of serious issues of harassment in the Katze Lab, we circulated a petition demanding that University central administration stop protecting predators and do more to guarantee the health and safety of their employees.
  • We additionally have a union appointee to the University-wide Health and Safety Committee, which meets monthly.
