Tomorrow (April 1st) marks a milestone in our year long coalition effort to win $15/hour, as the City of Seattle minimum wage ordinance officially goes into effect. UAW 4121 members and campus allies are taking action to ensure that all employers – including UW – implement the wage increases, for all low wage workers (students, custodians, and others) on all three campuses. Come to the HUB starting at 11:00 a.m. and join us in marching across campus in solidarity with low-wage workers.
While grassroots activism led to the passage of this ordinance by the Seattle City Council and pushed the national conversation on living wage issues, UAW Local 4121 is working with labor and community allies to create better enforcement mechanisms so more low-wage workers will be empowered to speak up if they don’t receive an increase. Whether it’s through collective bargaining, mobilizations, worker centers, legal clinics, class actions, or other means, it’s important to remember that the struggle to achieve a living wage for all continues even after the historic change to the law.
Bargaining
Check out our summary of what happened in bargaining last week here. After our action during finals week the University is beginning to respond but still is slow in responding to our proposals to curb institutional oppression and improve instructional quality. As always, all members are invited and encouraged to attend negotiations to keep pressure on UW.
Our next bargaining session is Wednesday April 1, at 12 noon in Condon 311. A full schedule of dates/times is available here.
