Dear UAW Member,
For the past several weeks, thousands of UAW 4121 members across UW have been coming together to take action to support appointment extensions for Academic Student Employees and Postdocs. Appointment extensions are a particularly urgent need for international students and scholars needing visa continuation, all ASEs and Postdocs facing funding uncertainty as early as next month, as well as many of us whose research has been delayed because of COVID-19. And momentum around these issues is spreading nation-wide!
In March, we demanded to bargain with UW administration over the impacts of COVID-19 on our work as part of a powerful coalition of UW unions. We now have our first bargaining date scheduled to discuss appointment extensions, during which we will negotiate with administration over our demands — this Thursday 5/7 from 8:30-10am via Zoom. All UAW 4121 members are welcome to participate in bargaining — please RSVP here to receive information about how to join the Zoom meeting.
In the meantime, there are two quick and critical ways you can help ensure we’re in a strong position to win on these urgent needs. If you haven’t already:
- SIGN ON TO THE PETITION calling for appointment extensions. In order to move administration during negotiations, it’s critical that as many ASEs and Postdocs are signed on — every voice helps!
- WRITE YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REP to call for increased funding for higher education and research, including for international students and scholars. This form will take you through a few easy steps to send a message to your representative.
In solidarity,
