Fraud Alert: Fake “Government” Calls Targeting International Students
Recently UWPD sent out a campus-wide alert that individuals posing as agents from the FBI, ICE, IRS, UWPD, or other government agencies have been calling students and demanding money for what they claim are tax or legal problems. In particular, these professional thieves have been targeting international students, and they threaten jail, deportation, or other consequences if you do not pay. These calls are fake–don’t give them your credit card number, online transfer information, or other personal financial information. They may use computer software to make their caller ID appear real, but U.S. government and law enforcement agencies never demand money by phone.
If you receive a call like this, you should hang up without giving any personal information, report it to UWPD, and contact your Union representative at email@example.com.
