Health and Safety Meeting on Monday

As we head into Fall Quarter and return to campus, there are still many unresolved questions about UW plans on vaccine attestation, masking, and safety precautions in a changing pandemic landscape. This is a rapidly evolving situation and our Contract Enforcement Working Group is keeping close attention as it develops. Please note that both ASE and Postdoc contracts ensure that we cannot be required to work in conditions that pose an imminent threat to health & safety.

ASE and Postdoc members are meeting on Monday, 8/16 at 4pm to discuss and identify issues facing members and how we can organize around our health and safety protections. RSVP here. For more information, check out the COVID-19 Resource Center on our website. In addition, if you have questions or concerns about your rights under the contract, email contractenforcement@uaw4121.org.

Get Involved! Join ASE and Postdoc Department Organizing

Get involved in organizing in your department by joining department organizing committees (OCs)! Department organizing committees are crucial to building strong communities that can proactively address specific issues that academic student workers face in their day to day. We organize to restructure power at UW to empower students and workers on many levels–from departments, the University, our local communities, and beyond. As OCs, we’re organizing not only to address current problems, but also to raise expectations about what kind of world is possible and to proactively build a University and community that meaningfully supports the wellbeing of working and vulnerable people. We’re committed to organizing that’s based in relationships of solidarity, accountability, and care.

You can learn more about ASE and Postdoc organizing committees here! To get involved, get connected with your department OC, or ask questions, reach out to the ASE organizing committee at ase-organizing@uaw4121.org, Postdoc organizing committee at uwpubargaining@uaw4121.org, or contact your department steward.

Webinar: Defending Democracy in a Period of Far-Right Insurrection

When: September 23, 5:30 pm
How to joinRegister at this link!

Description: Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action (PSARA) is holding a webinar on defending democracy. Leonard Zeskind is the founder of the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights (irehr.org) and author of Blood and Politics: History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream. He will discuss the convulsions inside the white nationalist movement after the January 6 insurrection and the fastest growing sectors within this movement since the insurrection. He will describe developments in Western Washington and the best ways to stop the onslaught against democracy. He will provide information to help us stand up against white nationalism and the anti-immigrant xenophobia, racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry it produces. Questions and answers will follow the presentation. The webinar will be facilitated by Cindy Domingo.

Now Hiring! Postdoc EPIC Trainer

Empowering Prevention and Inclusive Communities (EPIC) is hiring 2 new Postdoc training specialists! The EPIC program is an innovative peer-to-peer harassment prevention training program jointly run between our union and the university, and was a major win from the most recent ASE and Postdoc contracts.

The Postdoctoral Scholar Training Specialist positions will have the opportunity to work with a team to develop, implement, and evaluate the EPIC program. The Training Specialist is a 20% FTE position. This position focuses on working with the UW Postdoctoral Scholar community and will build on the EPIC program that was originally developed in 2018-2019. The Training Specialist will facilitate trainings and support the wellbeing and safety of the University of Washington community. The training program includes information regarding sexual harassment, discrimination, intersectional power dynamics, bystander intervention strategies, response options, UW policies and procedures, and union rights. You can apply on UW Hires (UW Requisition #189319).
