After a Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked in early May 2022, UAW 4121 members responded immediately, joining with thousands of others in Seattle for rallies, establishing the Solidarity and Mobilization Workgroup, joining coalition organizing work, and more. On June 24 when the ruling was finalized, 4121 members turned out alongside thousands of others in Seattle — and across the country — for a massive rally demanding reproductive justice.
The repeal of Roe poses a far-reaching attack on abortion rights for people of all genders in the US — the latest in a wave of attacks on reproductive rights and the rights of trans and queer youth across the country. In particular, this disproportionately impacts abortion access for those who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color, low-income, or live in states with trigger bans.
As part of the labor movement, we can and should play an active role in organizing to defend and expand reproductive rights. Building the kind of power we need to win reproductive justice will require joining with our broader communities to take mass collective action, and there will be a number of ways you can participate in the coming weeks.
