Last week, we sent out an email describing how the GOP Tax Plan would impact the typical graduate employee at UW by treating tuition waivers as taxable income. Hundreds of people have signed on to our petition, and members are making their voices clear — taxing tuition waivers would create an undue burden on those who can least afford it, and would make a graduate education practically impossible for all but the super wealthy.
If you haven’t already, please take a moment now to add your name to the petition, and help strengthen our contract campaign by filling out the bargaining survey. The University — and Congress — pay attention to participation rates, and higher participation means more power to defend ourselves against these kinds of attacks.
Please also plan to participate in Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal’s Rapid Response Tele-Town Hall on the Tax Plan this Tuesday from 6:20-7:20 pm. House Republicans are expected to bring their tax plan to the floor this week, and Congresswoman Jayapal is collecting stories about how this would affect Washingtonians so she can better fight for a fair budget.
