Thursday Action: Librarian Strike, Membership Meeting, Reproductive Justice
This Thursday 10/13 will be packed with power at UW! Join fellow 4121 members to take action in solidarity with striking Librarians & Press Staff, join our monthly membership meeting, and participate in a rally at 5pm for reproductive justice. Wear your blue UAW shirt, and if you don’t already have one, fill out this form to coordinate pick-up.
UW Librarians & Press Staff are holding a one-day strike on Thursday 10/13 – please join the rally at 12pm on Red Square to show your support! The union of UW Librarians and Press Staff, UW Libraries United (UWLU), has been in negotiations with UW Admin for their first contract for more than a year, but in that time, Admin has made very little movement on key issues, including fair compensation, racial equity provisions, and workplace protections. Striking workers are requesting your support in any of the following ways – please take action today to help demonstrate that the UW community is united in solidarity with Librarians!
From 4-5pm, join the membership meeting via Zoom. As we’re starting a new academic year, this meeting will feature an introduction to the union, overview of the year to come, and opportunities to plug into action both in our local and in solidarity with other workers. To access the link and/or call-in number, please fill out this short form. All members in good standing are encouraged to attend, and anyone who is not yet a member can sign up here beforehand. The proposed agenda for the meeting is as follows:
- Approve Agenda
- Approve Minutes
- Welcome!
- Elections Committee
- Workgroups and Organizing Committees
- Adjourn
Then at 5pm, join a rally for reproductive justice at the George Washington Statue, hosted by UW’s Progressive Student Union. The rally will be a way to involve the broader UW community in the movement for reproductive justice on campus and across Seattle, and will feature both UW students and community members as speakers. To join up with fellow 4121 members, please RSVP here.
Rally for Tenants’ Rights on 10/21
The housing survey that 4121 members organized last spring revealed many of our members experienced rent hikes and housing maintenance issues. Recently, UW announced that they are accepting bids to privatize four major student housing developments. Privatization will lead to increased rent costs and lower quality housing – amongst other issues. This is why on October 21st, 4121 members are holding a Rally for Tenants’ Rights to build our power and to fight back against this recent proposal. At the rally, we will have asynchronous brainstorming/collaborative activities & and speakers on the history of renters’ rights in Seattle and UW’s role in the local rental market. RSVP & get involved in outreach for the rally here!
Reminder! Update your address for UAW vote
Please take a moment to ensure your mailing address is up to date for an important UAW election beginning next week!
Last Fall, UAW members across the country voted to establish direct elections for officers of the UAW International Executive Board (IEB). Under this new system, IEB members (including International President, Secretary-Treasurer, 3 Vice Presidents, and 9 Regional Directors) will be elected through Union-wide elections in which all UAW members will be able to directly vote for nominated candidates. IEB elections will be held this October & November 2022 via mail-in ballot, and all UAW members in good standing as of October 31, 2022 will be eligible to vote.
Ballots will be mailed out to members beginning on October 17, and it’s critical that every UAW member submits their vote. To ensure you receive your ballot, please make sure the mailing address you have on file is up to date.
Here are some easy ways you can check:
- If you received a copy of the July/August/September edition of Solidarity Magazine in the mail, that confirms that your address is up to date.
- On 9/29/22, 4121 members should have received an email containing the mailing address currently on file for you, so you can verify if it is correct.
- If you signed up for membership this September or October, you may not have received Solidarity Magazine or the 9/29/22 email because of data entry & mailing timelines. However, if you included your mailing address on your membership form, your address should be up to date.
- If you signed up for membership earlier than this September or October and did not receive a copy of Solidarity Magazine, you likely need to update your address.
