University’s violation of the collective bargaining agreement means you might be owed money
In October 2014, Lifewise and the University implemented benefits cuts to the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP), the health insurance plan for UW academic student employees, without notifying or bargaining with UAW 4121.
Benefits changes include, but are not limited to:
-
Individual out-of-pocket maximum raised $300 per term, from $1,125 to $1,425
-
Family out-of-pocket maximum raised $600 per term, from $2,250 to $2,850
-
Office and clinic visits at Hall Health: Coverage cut from 100% to 90%
-
Diagnostic x-ray, lab, and imaging services at Hall Health: Coverage cut from 100% to 90%
-
Out-of-network alcohol and chemical dependency: Coverage cut from 100% to 60%
-
Out-of-network abortion: Coverage cut from 80% to 60%
-
Out-of-network organ transplants: Coverage cut from 60% to 0%
These changes—which violate Washington state law and the UAW 4121 contract—must be reversed, and academic student employees who have suffered any harm or loss from these cuts must be compensated. (A more detailed but not exhaustive list of changes can be found below.)
So what can you do?

If you think that you have been affected by these cuts (including, but not limited to: paying higher copays, paying a higher out-of-pocket maximum, delaying medical care due to anticipated costs), let us know by sending an email describing your experience to healthcare@uaw4121.org.

If you know someone in your department or workplace who may be affected by these cuts, share this notice with them.
