Solidarity With Striking UAW Workers
On Sunday night, nearly 50,000 UAW autoworkers at 31 General Motors plants began to strike after GM failed to make a satisfactory contract offer on key bargaining issues like wages, health insurance, and transitioning temporary workers to permanent status. This bargaining comes just a few months after GM closed several plants — all while GM CEO Mary Barra takes home $21 million a year (281 times more than the average GM employee). Negotiations with GM are particularly important because once the GM contract is agreed upon, it will pattern bargaining for an additional 100,000 workers at Ford and Fiat-Chrysler. We are strongly in solidarity with our fellow UAW members as they fight for a fair contract. In the coming days, be on the lookout for opportunities to support this important action.
Political Endorsements
Since the August Primary Elections, our Political Workgroup has continued interviewing candidates and considering key local races, and we have now endorsed Shuan Scott for Seattle City Council District 4. Shaun had a strong second-place showing in our membership straw poll on this race that led to our endorsement of our own Emily Myers. Shaun and Emily’s positions are in close alignment and we’re happy to have another solidly pro-labor candidate to endorse for the November general election. Like many of us Shaun has experienced Seattle’s skyrocketing cost of living as a worker in Seattle, and is running on a platform to end extreme income inequality, increase affordable housing, stronger renter protections, and increased transit access. Read more about Shaun and our full list of current endorsements here!
