ASE Strike FAQ for Undergrad Students

What does a strike mean for me?

If a class/quiz section/lab you are in is led by an ASE – it will not meet. ASEs will also not be performing any of their other duties involved in their position, which may include grading, proctoring exams, holding office hours, and responding to student emails.

How can I show solidarity with striking ASEs?

There are plenty of options! Undergraduates can join us at the picket line and any actions we have during the strike. An easy way to show support is by signing on to the undergraduate solidarity letter urging UW admin to meet our basic needs for a fair contract. Undergrads can also get involved in organizing efforts and participate in undergrad organizing committee – join the #ugrad-oc channel in our union slack for details!

Seems like ASEs are asking for a lot. Why should I support the strike?

ASEs are a vital part of the academic and research systems within UW. ASEs are striking because their demands for fair wages and working conditions (including healthcare) align with principles of equity and justice, which UW apparently espouses. By standing in solidarity, undergraduates reinforce the importance of a healthy, equitable, and respectful academic environment where all members are valued. Additionally, current ASEs are considering the next generation of student employees who might include you one day!

I’m an undergrad TA/RA/tutor/other academic student employee. Can I also go on strike?

Yes! You are likely also eligible to join the union, so make sure to do that as well if you haven’t already. Our contract also includes you, and we are fighting for things that directly benefit you such as raises for hourly employees.
