Dear Colleague,
WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
Our contract is now ratified and provisions are in effect unless there is a specific implementation date noted. Note that some terms might take time to be fully available due to administrative processing (contact us if you have any questions or problems). Note a few upcoming key dates:
- 1st of July: U-Pass is free of charge. (more details on that in a follow up email)
- 1st of August: new wage scale in effect.
- 1st of September: All PDs who had been denied wages get an additional 2% increase, see MOU.
Please note that the first paycheck covering the period August 1-15 is paid out on the 25th of August. Due to updates needed in Workday, implementing the new salaries may take slightly longer and be paid retroactively.
Please read a summary of each contract article here, and the articles in their entirety here.
BECOME A UNION MEMBER!
We negotiated the right to bargain over our current wage scale when the NIH scale changes. This could happen soon. The success of re-negotiations will largely depend on a strong union membership so we encourage everybody to become members TODAY. Members pay 1.44% in union dues, which are the only source of funding used to improve our working conditions and spent democratically e.g.: staff supporting Postdocs to enforce the contract and protect our newly gained rights and protections.
To become a member, fill out this membership form and submit a physical copy to a member of the bargaining committee, your Union area coordinator, or contact uwpostdocsunited@gmail.com to submit the form. Otherwise, stay tuned for a member to get in touch with you for help signing up. To learn more about membership and where our dues go, please see this FAQ on our website.
ELECTED UNION POSITIONS
After we complete and approve the bylaws for our Postdoc unit, there will be leadership positions within the Local that all Postdocs will be encouraged to run for, such as executive board positions, head stewards and stewards for each department. If you want to know about those positions and get more involved, contact us or join the special membership meeting on Thursday 6/27 from 5:30-7pm, HSB T-733. On the agenda for this meeting is to vote on the Bylaws Committee’s recommended changes for our Local Union’s bylaws to reflect our new Postdoc unit. We urge you to attend!
In solidarity,
The UW Postdocs United / UAW 4121 Bargaining Committee
