Wednesday, December 7, 4:30pm in Smith 102: “How the 1% uses technology to maintain power,” led by Phil Bereano (Human Centered Design & Engineering, emeritus)
Abstract: Athough we have been trained to consider technologies as value-free and neutral, they are actually manifestations of very particular value sets. Indeed, the internalization of the dominant ideology that technologies are valueless is actually part of the mechanism by which powerful groups in a society maintain their privileges and control. This talk will lay out an alternative way of understanding the social relations of technological phenomena as part of the project of re-possessing our freedom.
